Full frame width ca. 20,000 um

This is an extremely low magnification scan of a section of an infant finger; the image has been rotated by 180 degrees so as to appear as it would through a microscope with a demagnifying objective (ca. 0.3X). Numbers "5" are place over the epiphyseal regions of two developing phalanges. The numbers "1", "2", "3", and "4" indicate, respectively, the fingertip (note the epidermal ridges that will develop into the pattern recognized as a "fingerprint"), the fingernail, the nail root, and the proximal nail fold. The region of 2-4 can be seen at higher magnification in Skin 06A.
