SKIN 06B

This higher magnification of the central portion of SKIN 06A makes more obvious the cellularity of the dermis of the nail bed ("1") and the nail matrix ("2"), in comparison with the apparent absence of cellularity of the nail body ("3"). If one recalls that the fingernails are derivatives of the skin and that the nail matrix and nail body correspond to the basal and apical portions of the epidermis, respectively, this pattern "makes sense", as does the structure of the proximal nail fold ("4").
