Oral Cavity 11

Hide Legend
Full frame width = 2400 um

This low magnification light micrograph shows the region labelled "A" in Oral Cavity - Reference. The letters "P" indicate some of the papillae projecting from the dorsal surface of the tongue, into the oral cavity. Because this material was taken from a neonatal rat, the (developing) papillae are rather short and stubby and it is not possible to distinguish filiform or fungiform papillae. The numerous bundles of skeletal muscle (M), running in multiple directions, make up much of the body of the tongue. Lingual salivary glands are not seen in this micrograph because they are much less numerous near the dorsal surface of the tongue than near the lateral and ventral surfaces.
