Oral Cavity 09

Hide Legend
Full frame width = 1000 um

This micrograph is from a section of lip, similar to H33d. The oral surface of the lip is out of view to the right. Running diagonally through the field is a band of loose connective tissue. To the upper left is a lobule of a labial salivary gland (SG): in it you should be able to identify numerous mucous acini, occasional serous acini, some serous "demilunes", intralobular ducts of various size, and some adipocytes. At the lower right is a large excretory duct, which functions to carry the secretions of such labial glands to the lumen of the oral cavity. The lining of excretory ducts is variable and may include stratified cuboidal, stratified columnar, pseudostratified columnar and/or stratified squamous epithelium.
