Oral Cavity 07

Full frame width = 1000 um

This view of tongue was taken from a slide not unlike H35. Embedded in the stromal connective tissue (CT) are bundles of skeletal muscle running in all three orthogonal planes (1, 2, and 3). Much of the field is occupied by the mucous acini (M) of sublingual salivary glands, which should not be confused with the scattered patches of adipocytes (A). Although the stratified squamous epithelium that covers the surface of the tongue is not seen in this field, the abundance of skeletal muscle running in mutually orthogonal planes and the numerous salivary gland lobules make identification of this material as having come from the tongue fairly likely.
