This is a very low magnification view of a mucicarmine-stained salivary gland, a preparation used to reveal the mucous content of secretory cells. This slide is from the same batch as loan slide H39b; the slide is labeled submandibular, but may in fact come from a portion of the sublingual that lies in close proximity to the submandibular. In either case, it is obvious that, with the exception of regions such as at "E", most of the acini are of the mucous variety, whose contents are stained a deep red in this preparation. Note the "island" of interlobular connective tissue around "A", within which can be found blood vessels (such as at B), nerve fibers (such as at C), and large excretory ducts (D). To the right of the "E" is a small cluster of serous acini; this region is seen at higher magnification in Oral Cavity 04.
