This micrograph was also taken of the intestinal "side" of slide D05. Shown here, at fairly high magnification, is a portion of the mucosa. The asterisk has been placed in the lumen, between two adjacent villi; in fact it is nearly touching the "stuck" secretions of two goblet cells. Be sure you recognize that while the nucleus of the left-hand goblet cell IS in the plane of section, that of the right-hand one is NOT. Note the various appearances that are presented by the enterocytes sectioned at varying angles. Can you "picture" how the left edge of the field shows the intestinal lining epithelium sectioned nearly parallel to its basement membrane? As is typical, the lamina propria is highly cellular; although you can not distinguish them in this micrograph, in the microscope you should be able to identify plasma cells and mast cells, as well as fibroblasts and lymphocytes.
