This is a cross section of the proximal duodenum. The field includes all four layers of the wall, from the mucosa on the left, to the serosal surface on the right. The asterisk (*) indicates a portion of the myenteric nerve plexus, although at this low magnification it is not possible to identify neurons, glial cells, etc. The submucosa runs vertically down the center of the field with large clusters of the secretory cells of Brunner's glands being quite obvious. At "D" is a duct, running horizontally; in life this carried secretions of Brunner's gland through the muscularis mucosa and into the lumen of the mucosal crypts, from where the secretions reached the lumen of the small intestine.
