Here, at higher magnification, is the region around the asterisk in Intestines 06. The muscularis mucosa ("M") separates the submucosa (("Sb") from the mucosa; note how much more cellular the connective tisssue ("CT") of the lamina propria is than the submucosa. Just below the "L"[which marks the lumen of a intestinal gland (or crypt, of Lieberkuhn)] is a cluster of cells with poorly resolved seromucous secretory droplets. These are the cells of Paneth, which play a bacteriostatic role, by ingesting bacteria and/or by secreting enzymes (such as lysozyme) that are bacteriocidal. The "G" indicates the apical mucous "cup" of a goblet cell.
