This section of monkey colon shows the characteristic features of this major portion of the large intestine. The mucosa consists of fairly straight tubular glands (no villus projections), whose lining epithelium is comprised mostly of goblet cells. The large spaces ("*") just below the muscularis mucosa ("M") are probably processing artefacts, although some may be dilated venous vessels. Note how the outer layer of the muscularis externa is much thinner to the right of the arrow than to the left. The large oval mass of longitudinally oriented smooth muscle at "TC" is one of the (three) taenia coli.
