Bone marrow smear. The cell labeled "A" is most likely a proerythroblast. There is an absence of granules, the cytoplasm is a medium bluish-gray and the nucleus is close to spherical. Distinguishing between this and a myeloblast (not shown here) is difficult. The cell labeled "B" is a neutrophilic myelocyte. The cell labeled "C" is a band neutrophil. The cluster of cells indicated by "D" are different stages of polychromatophilic erythroblasts. Remember that since this slide was prepared as a smear it may not represent the orientation and placement of cells in vivo in the bone marrow. However, erythroid cells do usually develop as "islands" of cells, similar to what is seen here.
