Esophagus & Stomach 08
Hide Legend
Full frame width = 395 um
This is a low magnification view of slide D05, the thin plastic section of the gastroduodenal junction. It is oriented so the pyloric stomach is to the left and the proximal duodenum is to the right. The irregular dark line zig-zagging down the center of the field indicates the juncture between the two regions, which was distorted during sample preparation. Even at this very low magnification it is possible to see that the surface epithelium lining the small intestine has scattered goblet cells and is thus readily distinguishable from the lining of the stomach - a continuous layer of mucous surface cells. The letter "X" is placed in the mass of smooth muscle of the innermost layer of the stomach muscularis externa: it constitutes the pyloric sphincter.
Slide O-8, 2.5X objective; no finder slide needed, but slide is place on stage with label to RIGHT.
