This is a view of the pyloric stomach in a thin plastic section. With the letters S indicating the submucosa, you should be able to identify the mucosa and the muscularis externa. The outermost layer is not included in this section; do you expect to find a serosa or an adventitia? The large projection occupying most of the center of the field is a ruga - a fold of the entire mucosa "draped" over a fold of the submucosa. Note the extensive folding of the mucosa, whose epithelium forms a series of pits and glands. The region around the letter "X" is shown at higher magnification in Esophagus and Stomach 06a.
