This is a cross-section of the proximal portion of the esophagus. The thinnest bar (near the top of the field) spans the entire mucosa, with A indicating the mucosal epithelium (NON-keratinized), B indicating the lamina propria, and C indicating bundles of smooth muscle of the m. mucosae. The thicker horizontal bar in the middle of the field spans the submucosa. The THICK horizontal bar to the right of the field spans the inner (circumferential) layer of the muscularis externa, which, here, is comprised mainly of skeletal muscle.
