Esophagus & Stomach 01

Full frame width = 2400 um

This shows the junction between the esophagus (on the right) and stomach (on the left). The vertical bar marks the abrupt transition from the stratified squamous (non-keratinized) epithelium lining the esophagus to the simple cuboidal epithelium, made of mucous surface cells, that covers the lumenal wall of the cardiac and all other parts of the stomach. Note how the submucosal esophageal glands spill over into the gastric submucosa. Note also that, although it may not be easy to trace the muscularis mucosae from the esophagus to the stomach, it IS present in both organs, thus differentiating this junction from that between the rectum and the anal canal.
