In the center of the field is a cluster of cells that are part of the columnar epithelium which lines the lumen of the small intestine and sends deep tubular glandular invaginations down into the lamina propria. The asterisk (*) is in the lumen of the gland (or crypt of Lieberkuehn), a space that is in continuity with the lumen of the intestine. Arrow A indicates the large seromucous secretory granules of the Paneth cells found in such glands, while arrow B indicates the remnants of the mucous droplets that, in life, filled the apical "cup" of one of the numerous goblet cells.
