Shown here are several large neurons in an autonomic ganglion. The arrows "A" indicate yellow-brown pigment granules in the cytoplasm of two of these neurons. These granules (variously called "lipofuscin" or "wear and tear" granules) are tertiary lysosomes laden with lipid-rich deposits that accumulate in these long-lived cells because the lysosomal array of degradative enzymes is typically unable to completely breakdown membranous debris.
