This section of the heart was stained with Iron-Hematoxylin. At the bottom of the field, just "inside" the endometrium, are two bundles of Purkinje fibers, cut in cross section. Note that these fibers are larger and more pale staining than the "standard" cardiac myofibers filling most of the rest of the field. The pale space in the center of each Purkinje fiber contains the nucleus (visible in some of the fibers) and, prior to the extraction that accompanies tissue preparation, contained large amounts of glycogen.
